Time… Friend or Foe?

October 8, 2010 1 comment

Hey, what time is it?

Time for you to decide if time is on your side… or against you.  Time to make the choice if you want to value your time, or fritter it away.

Many of us say, ” I just don’t have the time.” Well you have the same amount of time in a week as does everyone… we all have 168 hours each week.  That is the same as Bill Gates, Michael Dell, or anyone else that you deem to be successful and have it all together.

The reality is that we have to learn to use that same 168 hours as an advantage and not allow it to taunt us as being not enough.  We know each week we will have the same amount, as the days are all the same… We can use this to our advantage if we learn to plan our time in advance.  Doing a “time budget” is a great way to “see” where our time is going.  Simply start with 168 and subtract out the number of hours you work, the sleep hours you want, etc. and see where your time is going.  In doing so you should be able to “find” time you did’t know you had…

The key is to prioritize properly and use the hours you have available to accomplish those things that will bring you further success, hopefully allowing you to free up more time in the future.  Zig Ziglar said it best,  “it’s not a lack of time, it’s a lack of priority.”

A few hours a week, used properly, can bring you a great deal of success in a short while.  If you simply sit in front of the TV and let the next reality show numb you and “steal” your time away, then you will always view time as a villain.  Time is limited in our lives, at the end of our days we will always wish we had more, yet no amount of wealth can buy it…

My advice is to use what you have wisely, so at the end you can not have the regret of having wasted it on less than important things…   Now go, budget your time for the next week of your life, and find success.

You got to fail more… to do better

October 3, 2010 Leave a comment

Had any little failures lately?

Any large ones?

If you answered no, then I want to ask “why not…”

If you never fail, then you may never learn!  You see if you go through life trying to make sure that you never have even the smallest of failings, then you are playing it too safe.  You have to let go of that mind set and be willing to experience some failure, so that you have the chance to learn from it.

Don’t fear failure so much that you refuse to try new things. The saddest summary of a life contains three descriptions: could have, might have, and should have. — Louis E. Boone

Now I am not advocating that you let you marriage falter because you think it will teach you something… Of all the things in life working on your marriage is one you should give your all and try and not fail.  However in all other areas of your life you have to be willing to take a little calculated risk. Chance the idea that you may fail for a time, with the opportunity to learn if you do and be better for the experience.

Failure is only the opportunity to begin again more intelligently.  ~Henry Ford

You really do need to give yourself permission to risk failure so that you can have a life that will teach you many things as you go… If you live your life in a bubble, never willing to expose yourself to the vast experiences of life due to fear, you will live a far too simple common life.  If you want to live a life of fullness and learn much, be willing to fail more often.

“I have missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I have lost almost 300 games. On 26 occasions I have been entrusted to take the game winning shot . . . and missed. And I have failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why . . . I succeed.” Michael Jordan

Now, remember that failure is an event, not who or what you are…  Even the greatest of those men and women have had many failures, they just used them to learn and move on.

To more failure…

… and your future greatness!!

Focus, or suffer from debilitation

Focus…

It’s a simple word,  My dictionary defines it as:

noun: a central point, as of attraction, attention, or activity

verb: to concentrate: to focus one’s thoughts.

Okay so what does it mean, or what should it mean for you in your life?

To focus, you have to concentrate on one single task. You have to give your all to that one thing that is at that time deemed to be of the most importance. Sometimes that means that we also have to take our eyes (and minds) off of other things that may seem important, but not critical at that time.  That means that you have to prioritize, and maybe simplify, everything that you do. You can’t keep up with 100 emails, and take phone calls, and schedule the next meeting, all while trying to finish another report. You have to decide what is the most important at THIS time and focus on it with fierce intensity.

Zig Ziglar says: “You have to be a meaningful specific and not a wandering generality.”

In other words, you have to focus on the task  at hand, or nothing gets done. If you try and complete too many tasks at one time, you end up scattered in all that you are doing and accomplish nothing useful.  A lot of people are “nowhere” all day. They go to work and think about being home or somewhere else, and when they are home they think I should be finishing up my work. You have to focus where you are at if you want to win at the game of life.

We may have to upset friends or family sometimes too, because if we focus on the task at hand, that may mean that they get put on the “back burner” so to speak. Many pro athletes have such focus that they may not even know that they ignore someone that they know and are close to.

Tony Perez, the Cincinnati Reds star, when asked how he used to hit so well would say’ “I see the ball, I hit the ball.”

In other words, he had tremendous focus. He kept his eye (and mind) on the task at hand and tuned out other distractions.

We must learn to set priorities and make lists of what is most important and then follow through until we have the task at hand complete… Now when you are home with the family, focus on them. Focus on that which is most important and when it is taken care of, you can finally relax and not worry about where else you should be or what other task you need to be doing.

Use focus to win, and have the life you always hoped for… or live a life of turmoil and debilitation…  Only you can decide.

Today is your new Birthday!

Happy Birthday to you…

Today is your new birthday… What? You already have a birthday. I know but follow with me a moment.

Today is your birthday for the first day of the rest of your life.

Oliver Wendell Holmes said, “The biggest tragedy is that most people die with their music still in them.”

Now you may ask what is your “music”?  That my friend is for you to find out on your own…

That is why it’s your new birthday.  Today I give you permission to start anew to discover that which has been placed inside you by your Creator.  That “music” that makes your heart sing, that is supposed to be shared with others to help make them sing too!  It is time for you to take action and get out of your comfort zone and try new things that will release your “music”.  Don’t wait and lie on your death bed with that thing still buried in you, Find and release that which gives you joy and share it with the world.

So go get a cake and some candles and do it right… sing Happy Birthday to yourself and then take the action to change your life.  Who knows in the process of releasing your “music”, the rest of the world may be forever changed and sing along with you.

Here is to your Birthday hope it’s full of joy and song and freedom, oh yeah and your special “music”.

Stop looking for what’s right in front of you!!!

Ever find yourself looking, searching, unable to find what you need, and later you realize… there it was, right in front of you.  Sometimes what we need most is right next to us and yet we don’t see it because we are so busy looking farther away for the greener pastures that we think are out there for us. Sometimes we need to humble ourselves and simply say… yes what I need is right here, I just need to learn to accept and use it to the best of my ability.

If you haven’t seen the movie Fireproof, I highly recommend it. If you have then you may remember this scene…

It really speaks to me.

By the way, If you don’t know Him, Give Jesus a try…

You just may find what you need most is right in front of you after all.

Books, Movies and The Bible

September 19, 2010 Leave a comment

Read a good book lately?

What kind of book?  Another novel or action adventure about some such creature… What did it teach you… anything worthwhile?

Books can contain much knowledge, or just garbage. It takes a choice to read what will help you grow.  There is a book that I recommend everyone read called…The Bible.

(Some say it’s “basic instruction before leaving Earth”)  Now whether or not you call yourself a believer, you need to read from this book as it contains Great wisdom and helpful insights for everyday living.  After all it was Authored by your Creator who loves you.

As far as other books anything that is non-fiction should impart some kind of knowledge, from biographies of great persons to good how to books by those who have achieved the same success that you desire.

Charlie “Tremendous” Jones said,

“You will be the same person in five years as you are today except for the people you meet and the books you read.”

The same applies to the movies you watch. If you watch reality TV, you may just rot your brain out… however if you find the occasional good show or movie about actual events of someone successful , it may impart wisdom to help you grow on your own personal journey.

Sadly many of us have a shelf full of DVD’s with movies that we will watch over and over, and little to no books.  Did you know that most successful persons with large homes have a personal library with the books they have read.

I have heard it said that if you read three books on a particular subject that you will know more about it  than 98% of the population.

That would make you known as an expert in that subject… what could you do for personal success with that knowledge?

Remember garbage in garbage out,  knowledge in and the sky is your limit…

To your freedom, I’ve got to go read now.

Do without for more success…

September 16, 2010 Leave a comment

Do without for more success… okay I know that seems strange, but lets talk about it.

What things do you do on a regular basis.

Now what things do you do regularly, that are useful, and bring you more success in your life.

Now what things do you do that are robbing you, or that are just time wasters?

Lets say you come home and crash on the couch and watch TV.  What does that do for your success? What about that $2-5 drink that you just have to stop at the store and get each day.  Feel that lighter feeling in your wallet?

Now I’m not saying to live a life of no fun, but we have to learn some… discipline.

Funny how some view it as a negative thing when you say that word, but without some it will leave you in a miserable existence.  Think for a minute if you and your wife/girlfriend just decided that you were not going to have any discipline and just let whatever way the wind blows, be your guide. We have to stop and ask if the choice we are about to make will bring us closer to where we want to be or further away. We have to mature and learn that right choices will bring us closer to where we desire to end up at.

Speaking of the end, you have to have a plan and have a destination in mind, or else you will just coast through life in limbo… You do have a picture of your “success” in mind right?

Oh well that’s a post for another day.

Start today to think about your choices, how you spend your time and money, and you will be getting ready to move towards that goal.

To your “success”,

Thomas
